*International Reading Association Young Author's Project -- August/September; Grades 6-8; *Soil and Water Conservation Poster and Essay Contest -- November; Grade 6. *Soil and Water Conservation Speech Contest -- November, Grades 7-8. *Duke TIP Program -- Qualifying 7th graders will be notified in the fall for the option of taking the SAT. *Knowledge Master Open (KMO) Contest -- Grade 6 in January and March, academic computer-based competition. *KMO Contest -- Grades 7 and 8; December and April; academic computer-based competition. *National Geographic Geography Bee -- Grades 6-8; December or January. *Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee -- Grades 6-8; school, and county competitions in January and February. *Sertomas Essay Contest -- a patriotic theme; Grade 6 only; January or February. *Mathcounts -- Grades 7 & 8; February. *Algebra Team -- Grade 7 & 8; March or April. *Battle of the Books -- Grades 6-8; Students should be reading throughout the year.
